1. The artificial flower made from paper was sold in the market.
Lengkapnya adalah “The artificial flower which/that was made from/of paper was sold in the market.
2. The air turned cold when the wind blew.
Maknanya adalah: “Udara berubah menjadi dingin ketika angin berhembus.
3. We made the juice from freshly squeezed oranges.
Bentuk verb untuk memodify noun hanya 2, yaitu verb-ing (present participle) kalau noun-nya melakukan action, dan verb3 (past participle) kalau nounnya dikenai action. Di soal ini, “oranges” dikenai action, maka yang benar adalah “squeezed“.
4. She has so many books that she needs more room to keep them.
Bagaimana dengan such???
Jangan gunakan such kalau noun-nya dimodify oleh intensifier (e.g. many, much, few, little)
5. Being unable to buy a house, she rented a small room near her office.
Maknanya adalah: Because she was unable to buy a house, she rented a small room near her office.
6. Many people in that hotel were frightened by the bombing threat issued by the terrorists. Phrase yang juga benar adalah “were frightened of”
7. While traveling to Mexico, the newlyweds visited the site of the Aztec.
Adverbials ini merupakan reduksi dari “while they were traveling….“, dimana subject dan be-nya dihilangkan.
8. The children had already slept by the time their parents got home.
Gunakan past perfect tense kalau modifiernya dalam past tense (by the time (when) their parents got home). Opsi B akan benar polanya kalau was diganti dengan were.
9. Had she overcome her shyness, she would have become a great teacher.
Unreal/contrary to fact conditional yang faktanya dalam past tense, “She didn’t overcome her shyness. She didn’t become a great teacher”. Conditional ini juga bisa ditulis “If she had overcome her shyness, she would have become a great teacher“.

in question number 7, could we make the reduction become “while they are traveling” so the next sentence become “the newlyweds visiting the site of the Astec” and it means the correct unswer is D
Swara Bhaskara
November 5, 2010
Main clause should not be reduced because it will change the meaning of the sentence, and in the worse scenario, it will make the sentence meaningless. Reduction can only be done in sub clause.
In the sentence in question, its main clause is “the newlyweds visited the site of the Aztec” and its sub-clause is “While they were traveling to Mexico“.

Mr SB I still don’t get it, why do the answer of question number 12 “the nearest bank”. isn’t it kind of embedded question?
Swara Bhaskara
November 24, 2010
Yes, it is an embedded question. However, option A will be correct if its sub-clause, which is a noun clause, uses the simple past tense.
The tourist asked me where the nearest bank was.
It’s a tense sequence problem.

First of all, thank you for the responses. Mr. Bhas, Bibite, Eko, Pal, Christ, thank you so much!
1. b. that lives. The subject is singular third person. So the verb should be added with “s”.
2. d. from which
3. e. for whom
4. a. to whom
5. a. from which these to chapters are taken
6. b. whom I told you about. We can imagine this sentence comes from two sentences: This is Mr. flash. I told you about him. Here, Mr. Flash is as an OBJECT. So we should use WHOM, and ABOUT at the end.
7. e. from which
8. c. to whom
9. d. without which one cannot enter the factory
10. c. with whom
11. d. about which
12. a. where the nearest bank is (??). Actually, I agree with Mr. Bhas. It should be: where the nearest bank WAS. Could it be mistyped?
Swara Bhaskara
November 25, 2010
Even though there are some discrepancies here, overall, I’m glad to notice that Pal, Christ, Eko, and Bibite have understood the basic concepts of writing adjective clauses. And, that’s the bottom line.
However, allow me to comment on question 1, 2, 5, 6, and 12.
Question 1. The best for this sentence should be:
I have just been introduced to the lady who lives next door.
Although the use of “that” to modify a person(s) is considered less formal, but from the given options, option B is the best one here. Option D would also be correct if written “living“.
I have just been introduced to the lady living next door.
Question 2. The action of “writing the article” was in the past, therefore, this sentence should be:
The article from which we got the data for our essay was written by a well known sociologist.
However, if we use “the author of the article“, we should use the simple present tense because till now and till in the future, the article’s author will remain the same.
The author of the article from which we got the data for our essay is a well known sociologist.
Question 5. Similar concept to the sentence in question 2, this sentence should be:
The book from which these two chapters were taken is only available in the library.
Question 6. The best sentence for this should be:
This is Mr. Flash about whom I told you.
Putting a preposition at the end of a sentence is considered informal. To make it formal, such a preposition should be put prior to its relative pronoun, as in question 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. And, sometimes, depending on the verb used, deleting such a preposition does not change the meaning of a sentence. In the sentence in question, there’s nothing wrong if we say,
This is Mr. Flash whom I told you (before).
Or less formally,
This is Mr. Flash that I told you (before).
OR in other examples:
Have I told you lately that I love you (Rod Stewart).
I was so confused because she told me this and he told me that.
Question 12. As I said before, this sentence is best if said:
The tourist asked me where the nearest bank was.
Don’t use the simple present tense pattern in a sub-clause if its main clause uses the simple past tense. The exceptions for this rule are 1) if the sub-clause is telling a general truth, and 2) if the main clause uses a subjunctive verb. But, I hope the be “IS” in this sentence is just a typo.
Now, let’s say that there’s no a typo in it. What’s wrong with this sentence?
The tourist asked me “the nearest bank”.
Or in other examples:
He asked me this.
She asked me that.
I don’t see any grammatical error in them. And, that’s why I chose option B.
And lastly, many thanks to Kanadeva for sharing these adjective clause problems with us. Great stuff.
Kanadeva
November 25, 2010
Excuse me, sir. I think the relative pronouns (including “that”) in the adjective clause mean “yang” in bahasa Indonesia. So, it’s different from “that” in your example “Have I told you lately that I love you” which means “bahwa”. Am I right?
Swara Bhaskara
November 25, 2010
Yes, you’re right. Sorry. Here, I just want to emphasize that the preposition ABOUT is not always needed. The following ones should be better examples for this.
This is the car that I told you before.
The car that I told you before has been sold.
And, we often hear people say,
What are you talking about?
Since it’s considered informal, it’s suggested to omit the prep. ABOUT without changing its meaning:
What are you talking?

…and from mnth3b3st, I only got 7 correct answers.
for number 9. How could it be “Had she overcome her shyness” Mr.S, it seems like a question sentece for me?.
your answer: Had she overcome her shyness, she would have become a great teacher.
Unreal/contrary to fact conditional yang faktanya dalam past tense, “She didn’t overcome her shyness. She didn’t become a great teacher”. Conditional ini juga bisa ditulis “If she had overcome her shyness, she would have become a great teacher“.
Swara Bhaskara
November 24, 2010
Hi Christ. That’s the way it is.
There are 2 basic forms of conditional sentences:
1. By using IF CLAUSE (the more common one), and
2. By placing auxiliary at the beginning of a sentence. In this case, IF is not used.
Other examples:
a. If you have any question, don’t hesitate to ask! = Should you have any question, don’t hesitate to ask!
b. If Mount Merapi had not erupted, Sam’s wedding would not have been delayed. = Had Mount Merapi not erupted, Sam’s wedding would not have been delayed.
