Hi Eko,
Why is it using were, not was, after the subject he? Well, because it’s in a subjunctive mood. A similar context has been discussed in “If I were Nazaruddin“.
And regarding my answers, yes, I have answered them all but I won’t post them shortly because I’d like to give others a chance to post their opinion first.

Hi guys,
I think there’s a typo in question 2. The question should read, “Young deers ……….”, not “Young deer ………”.
Sorry. I just copied and then pasted it from Iim without double checking it first.

To tell you the truth, No, I am not sure. What are your answers for question 11 and the others?

July 24, 2011
1. C alasan: landmark is a noun
2. A alasan: kalimat itu kan subjectnya plural “young deers” dan tense yang paling pantas adalah simple present “fawns are call young deers by people” (Active), “Young deers are called fawns by people” (Passive). Nah, karena “by people” dianggap tidak penting makanya dihilangin jadi “Young deers are called fawns”.
3. C
4. A alasan: subject “you” jadi verbnya “kick” karena main bola kan cuma pake satu bola jadinya objectnya “the ball”
5. C Alasan: Setahu saya ga ada pola -est yang diikuti than.
6. C alasan: Klausa If dalam American English gag pernah pake was
Yang lain nyusul hehehe.
Correct me if I’m wrong.

The following are my second opinion to the above questions.
1. C. IS A LANDMARK IN.
The Eiffel Tower is a landmark in Paris, France.
a. landmarks
d. is in a landmark
NOTE: Yeah,I choose option C but how about option A because the word landmark is also a verb? If we choose option A, does the sentence mean “Menara Eiffel menjadi landmark kota Paris, Prancis“?
2. A. ARE CALLED FAWNS.
Young deers are called fawns.
3. D. FROM ITS MOTHER.
Not until a dog is several months old does it begin to exhibit signs of independence from its mother.
4. A. MUST KICK THE BALL
To score a goal in soccer, you must kick the ball.
5. C. IS HIGHER THAN ANY OTHER ONE
The observation deck at the Sears Tower is higher than any other one in Chicago.
6. C. WEREN’T
If it weren’t so cloudy, we would plan on having the fair outside.
7. C. TO HAVE BEEN NOMINATED
At the 1984 Democratic National Convention in San Francisco, Geraldine Ferraro became the first woman to have been nominated for the vice presidency.
8. A. WHETHER
Badu: “What do reporters usually ask the authorities nowadays?”
Budi: “Whether Indonesia will be able to overcome its economic problem very soon”.
9. D. HAD BEEN
If he had been more confident during the interview, he might have got the job he wanted.
10. C. HAD LEFT
The Arman’s family would not have lost their bag, if they had left it in the hotel.
11. D. WOULD HAVE LOST
Riza : “Do you know that Tanto had withdrawn his money from the bank just before it was liquidated”?
Roni : “Oh yes, otherwise he would have lost a great deal.”
12. C. BILL IS NOT THE OWNER OF THE STORE
Bill has been working for this bookstore for many years, and now he acts as if he were the owner.
From this sentence we may conclude that: Bill is not the owner of the store.
13. C. WOULD NOT HAVE LENT HIM
Had I realized that Tim a bad driver, I would not have lent him my car.

hi SA, long time no see, I am sorry coz I can just reply your answers unlike the others…
and also thanks for your answers that I asked,
I will always learning doing that lesson.
your answers are almost same as mine
but I doubt to question numbering seven,
At the 1984 Democratic National Convention in San Francisco, Geraldine Ferraro
became the first woman _________ for the vice presidency.
a. to being nominated
b. to has been nominated
c. to have been nominated
d. to will be nominated.
because as far as I concerned that the sentence happened at the 1984 was taking place.
and as I know that modal auxiliary verbs cannot be used infinitive (to) in the front of auxiliary verbs themselves..
can you explain with your excuse for your answer clearly?
thank,
Sahirul Alim

Hi, Amalia. According to Mr. SB’s explanation, it’s called the perfect infinitive. It’s used to express that the the action of this infinitive has happened before the action of the main verb (predicate)
(to) + have + verb3, always have, never has after the preposition TO
Let’s ask Mr. SB for further explanation. Shall we?

Hi Bibite,
TO HAVE BEEN NOMINATED in the sentence in question is an infinitive called the perfect infinitives.
Yes, I agree with you that the particle TO sounds odd because native English speakers themselves quite seldom use this type of infinitives now. I’d prefer the sentence reads
At the 1984 Democratic National Convention in San Francisco, Geraldine Ferraro became the first woman who had been nominated for the vice presidency.
but such an option isn’t there, is it?
Option A would be correct if the ‘being” is changed to “be“, but it, of course, will change the sentence context. By doing so, the sentence would mean that the nomination took placed after the action of the verb became“.
Option B is incorrect because infinitive “to has been past participle” doesn’t exist, and neither does “to will be past participle” as in option D. A possible pattern for option D is “will be past participle”, but it doesn’t make sense here.
By the way, I’ve posted a new article entitled Perfect Infinitives. Please, have a look! I hope you’ll find it useful for this kind of English grammar problems. Thanks.

Hi Mr. SB
Utk no. 6, kenapa menggunakan ‘were’ bukan ‘was’, padahal subjectnya ‘It’.
Thank u for ur kind explanation.
Swara Bhaskara
October 27, 2011
Because it’s an unreal conditional sentence.
