My Personal Statement

Please, correct my personal statement below! Thank you.

I am student at Undergraduate Program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty(1), University(2) of Muhammadiyah Malang. My field of study is English Education. Now, learning and teaching English are to be(3) my concern(4).

For my interest in studying English, I was awarded as(5) one of UMM Outstanding Student at(6) last Educational(7) Day on May 2, 2011. The paper I presented was entitled Alphabetic Dice as Creative Media to Teach English Using Phonemic Awareness Concept(8) for Kindergarten Student(9). Achieving this, I would like to experiment the use of phonemic awareness concept to teach(10) English for kindergarten student(11) as my next(12) thesis.

Therefore, Indonesian English Language Study Program (IELSP) will really fit the need I plan to(13). The offered program academically will help me to know how the nature of teaching English is, as America is the native country of English(14). In addition, it is beneficial for my step of firming up my future thesis. Besides, culturally, it gives me much deeper benefit(15) for my next(16) career. As teacher’s to be (English Lecturer)(17), IELSP will of course broaden my insight of American culture or even more culture(18) existed(19) there, as America is melting pot(20) country.

Furthermore, my participation in IELSP will not(21) be beneficial for me personally but also for the institution where I work(21). They are(22) as Campus Newspaper Reporter (Bestari) and UMM Website(23) Translator (UMM Information and Technology Board). Being a reporter brings(24) me to have communication(25) with some sources; Directors(26), Professors(27), and even Foreigners(28), so that foreign language is needed here. Moreover, the effort of developing UMM Website(29) by providing English content(30) needs my good English skill. It is one of the strategies used to achieve World Class University (WCU) Program(31). Then, both jobs are getting easier with my involvement in IELSP.

The whole statements above describe how are(32) the need of IELSP will answer my process of learning and teaching English for the future.

Those that need to be double checked are mostly related to the number of nouns (e.g. singular vs plural) and the usages of articles. Some of them are because of word choice and ambiguous meaning.

The Revised PS

I am undergraduate student Faculty of Teacher Training Education University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). My field of study is English Education. Now, learning and teaching English are my intention.

For my interest in studying English, I was awarded to be one of UMM outstanding student in Education Day on May 2, 2011. The paper I presented was entitled Alphabetic Dice as Creative Media to teach English Using Phonemic Awareness for Kindergarten Students. Achieving this, I would like to experiment the use of Phonemic Awareness in teaching English for kindergarten students as my further thesis.

Therefore, Indonesia English Language Study Program (IELSP) will really fit the need I plan. The offered program, academically, will help me to know how the nature of teaching English is due to America is the native country of English. In addition, it is beneficial for my step of firming up my future thesis. Besides, culturally, it gives me deeper benefits for my long term career. As prospective teachers, IELSP will of course broaden my insight of American culture or even more culture there since America is “Melting Pot” country.

Moreover, the effort of developing UMM Website by providing English content needs my good English skill too. It is one of the strategies used to achieve World Class University (WCU) program. Then, both jobs are getting easier with my involvement in IELSP.

In the context of learning and teaching English, Indonesian’s English skill needs to be improved. In learning English, most Indonesians do not truly know of English nature. Somehow, in term of teaching English, teachers’ competence needs to be improved in order to be creative teacher for their student. If so, the truth of English orally and written can be taught properly. Those both things should be prioritized to build good atmosphere of English in Indonesia. In this part, the role of competent English teacher is really important.

The whole statements above describe how the need of IELSP will answer my process of learning and teaching English for future life. For me personally and for the society around me, this program is really beneficial.
