Contoh :
- Active : We fertilize the soil every 6 months
- Passive: The soil is fertilized by us every 6 months
Dari contoh ini dapat kita lihat bahwa:
- Object dari active voice (the soil) menjadi subject dari passive voice
- Subject dari active voice (we) menjadi object dari passive voice. Perhatikan pula bahwa terjadi perubahan dari subject pronoun ‘we’ menjadi object pronoun ‘us’.
- Verb1 (fertilize) pada active voice menjadi verb3 (fertilized) pada passive voice.
- Ditambahkannya be ‘is’ di depan verb3. Be yang digunakan adalah tergantung pada subject passive voice dan tenses yang digunakan. (Perhatikan pola-pola passive voice di bawah).
- Ditambahkannya kata ‘by’ di belakang verb3.
|
Subject + be + Verb3 + by + Object + modifier |
Pola active dan passive voice pada tiap tensis
a. Jika active voice dalam simple present tense, maka ‘be’ passive voice-nya adalah is, am atau are.
Contoh:
- Active : He meets them everyday.
- Passive : They are met by him everyday.
- Active : She waters this plant every two days.
- Passive : This plant is watered by her every two days.
b. Jika active voice dalam simple past tense, maka ‘be’ passive voice-nya adalah was atau were
Contoh:
- Active : He met them yesterday
- Passive : They were met by him yesterday
- Active : She watered this plant this morning
- Passive : This plant was watered by her this morning
c. Jika active voice dalam present perfect tense, maka ‘be’ passive voice-nya adalah been yang diletakkan setelah auxiliary has atau have, sehingga menjadi ‘has been’ atau ‘have been’
Contoh:
- Active : He has met them
- Passive : They have been met by him
- Active : She has watered this plant for 5 minutes.
- Passive : This plant has been watered by her for 5 minutes.
d. Jika active voice dalam past perfect tense, maka ‘be’ passive voice-nya adalah been yang diletakkan setelah auxiliary had, sehingga menjadi had been
Contoh:
- Active : He had met them before I came.
- Passive : They had been met by him before I came.
- Active : She had watered this plant for 5 minutes when I got here
- Passive : This plant had been watered by her for 5 minutes when I got here
e. Jika active voice dalam simple future tense, maka ‘be’ passive voice-nya adalah be
Contoh:
- Active : He will meet them tomorrow.
- Passive : They will be met by him tomorrow.
- Active : She will water this plant this afternoon.
- Passive : This plant will be watered by her this afternoon.
- Active : The farmers are going to harvest the crops next week
- Passive : The crops are going to be harvested by the farmers next week.
f. Jika active voice dalam future perfect tense, maka ‘be’ passive voice-nya adalah been yang diletakkan setelah auxiliary will have, sehingga menjadi ‘will have been’
Contoh:
- Active : He will have met them before I get there tomorrow.
- Passive : They will have been met by him before I get there tomorrow.
- Active : She will have watered this plant before I get here this afternoon.
- Passive : This plant will have been watered by her before I get here this afternoon.
g. Jika active voice dalam past future perfect tense, maka ‘be’ passive voice-nya adalah been yang diletakkan setelah auxiliary would have, sehingga menjadi ‘would have been’.
Contoh:
- Active : He would have met them.
- Passive : They would have been met by him.
- Active : She would have watered this plant.
- Passive : This plant would have been watered by her.
h. Jika active voice dalam present continuous tense, maka ‘be’ passive voice-nya adalah (is, am atau are) + being.
Contoh:
- Active : He is meeting them now.
- Passive : They are being met by him now.
- Active : She is watering this plant now.
- Passive : This plant is being watered by her now.
i. Jika active voice dalam past continuous tense, maka ‘be’ passive voice-nya adalah (was atau were) + being.
Contoh:
- Active : He was meeting them.
- Passive : They were being met by him.
- Active : She was watering this plant.
- Passive : This plant was being watered by her.
j. Jika active voice dalam perfect continuous tense, maka ‘be’ passive voice-nya adalah (has/have) been + being.
Contoh:
- Active : He has been meeting them.
- Passive : They have been being met by him.
- Active : She has been watering this plant.
- Passive : This plant has been being watered by her.
k. Jika active voice dalam past perfect continuous tense, maka ‘be’ passive voice-nya adalah had been + being.
Contoh:
- Active : He had been meeting them.
- Passive : They had been being met by him.
- Active : She had been watering this plant.
- Passive : This plant had been being watered by her.
l. Jika active voice dalam future continuous tense, maka ‘be’ passive voice-nya adalah will be + being.
Contoh:
- Active : He will be meeting them.
- Passive : They will be being met by him.
- Active : She will be watering this plant.
- Passive : This plant will be being watered by her.
m. Jika active voice dalam past future continuous tense, maka ‘be’ passive voice-nya adalah would be + being.
Contoh:
- Active : He would be meeting them.
- Passive : They would be being met by him.
- Active : She would be watering this plant.
- Passive : This plant would be being watered by her.
n. Jika active voice dalam future perfect continuous tense, maka ‘be’ passive voice-nya adalah will have been + being.
Contoh:
- Active : He will have been meeting them.
- Passive : They will have been being met by him.
- Active : She will have been watering this plant.
- Passive : This plant will have been being watered by her.
o. Jika active voice dalam past future perfect continuous tense, maka ‘be’ passive voice-nya adalah would have been + being.
Contoh:
- Active : He would be meeting them.
- Passive : They would be being met by him.
- Active : She would be watering this plant.
- Passive : This plant would be being watered by her.
Contoh-contoh yang lain:

PENGGUNAAN “WAS” dan “WERE” DALAM PASSIVE VOICE.
Saya asumsikan pertanyaan Dedy adalah contoh penggunaan to be “was” dan “were” dalam kalimat pasif (passive voice). Jika demikian,
1. Was dan were dalam simple past tense.
Polanya:
I/He/She/It + was + verb3 + ……
You/We/They + were + verb3 + …
Contoh:
a. I was kissed by my dog earlier tonight.
b. He was hit by a car last week.
c. She was accepted to be a secretary at my school.
d. It was found by Christopher Columbus in 1492.
e. You were excluded from the team.
f. We were kept in the house.
g. They were repaired and repainted.
2. Was dan were dalam past continuous tense.
Polanya:
I/He/She/It + was + + being + verb3 + …
You/We/They + were + + being verb3 + …
Contoh:
a. I was being kissed by my dog when my daughter came.
b. He was being interrogated by my father
c. She was being hugged by her boyfriend when I entered the room.
d. It was being considered by the committee.
e. You were being looked for by the teacher at ten o’clock this morning.
f. We were being kept in the house when the police found us.
g. They were being repaired and repainted when I arrived there.
3. Was dan were dalam past future tense.
Polanya:
I/He/She/It + was going to be + verb3 + …
You/We/They + were going to be + verb3 + …
Contoh:
a. I was going to be promoted as the company’s manager last month.
b. He was going to be interrogated by my father yesterday.
c. She was going to be sent to Australia but she failed to get a visa.
d. It was going to be considered by the committee last Monday but it was postponed.
e. You were going to be left alone but luckily you showed up on time.
f. We were going to be taught by Ms. Jasmine but she changed her mind.
g. They were going to be repaired and repainted but my money was not enough.
4. Was dan were dalam past future continuous tense.
Polanya:
I/He/She/It + was going to be + being + verb3 + …
You/We/They + were going to be + being + verb3 + …
Contoh: ….
Ada yang mau sharing contoh kalimat dengan menggunakan pola 4 ini?

I’ll try, Mr. Bhas. These sentences are modification of your examples in “Past Future Continuous Tense“.
- TV was going to be being watched by my daughter at eight o’clock last night.
- The materials were going to be being copied by her at 10 o’clock this morning.
- English was going to be being discussed by me and my classmates at 2 p.m. last Friday.
- This time last year, Economics was going to be being studied by her at the University of Toronto.
- An English exam was going to be being taken by them at 10 a.m. yesterday.
- A football game was going to be being watched by us at 11 p.m. last night.

Morning, sir. I have a question. What is the active form of “The scholarship will be given to the student who has passed the selection test”? What should we put as the subject? Thank you.
Swara Bhaskara
November 26, 2010
Great question, Kanadeva.
Unless it has been mentioned in the previous sentence, this kind of passive voice in which there’s no “by + object” is kind of impossible to change it directly into its active voice form. If the previous sentence states that, for example, “This university provides a scholarship.”, then it is very clear that the subject for the active voice is “the university”.
The university will give the scholarship to the student who has passed the selection test.
OR, we modify the sentence a little by using an anonymous subject, such as, someone, something etc. The subject we choose should not make the sentence deviate from its passive form.
The book has been stolen. (passive)
Someone has stolen the book. (active)

Hi…
let me ask you about TO infinitive in passive voice…,
I got some problems in this lesson.
could all of TO infinitives be changed in passive sentence.?
example:you failed to submit the application(Active sentence).
could this sentece be made in passive sentence..??
before u answer,I have a prediction about it.
and this my answer: you failed to be submited the application.. is it right..??.
Swara Bhaskara
June 28, 2011
Hi Ahmad,
When we change a sentence from a passive voice to its active form, or vice versa, we should not change its context.
You failed to submit the application (Kamu gagal mempresentasikan aplikasi tersebut).
doesn’t make sense if we say,
You failed to be submitted the application (Kamu gagal dipresentasikan aplikasi tersebut).
To correct it, we simply use the object of this active sentence as the subject of its passive one.
The application failed to be submitted (by you) (Aplikasi tersebut gagal dipresentasikan (oleh kamu)).

All transitive verbs can be in a form of “TO + BE + VERB3“. On the other hand, none of intransitive verbs can be in a form of “TO + BE + VERB3“.
Contoh:
Does the Indonesian flag need to be raised everyday? (CORRECT. Raise is a transitive verb)
Does the Indonesian flag need to be risen everyday? (INCORRECT. Rise is an intransitive verb)

Sir, I think you should add some explanations and some examples of question form in the passive voice.
Because I have found there is question form in the passive voice.
E.g.
Simple Continuous tense
Is Sahirul opening the door? (Active)
Is the door being opened by Sahirul? (Passive)
Simple Past
Did Sahirul open the door? (Active)
Did the door opened by Sahirul? (Passive)
Present Perfect
Has Sahirul opened the door? (Active)
Has the door been opened by Sahirul? (Passive)
Please add more examples and give me more explanations, Sir.
Swara Bhaskara
July 6, 2011
Thanks Sahirul for your suggestion.
Well, we’ve known that every passive voice has at least one auxiliary. So, by placing the auxiliary before the subject of the sentence, we’ll have a Yes/No question. And by adding a WH question word before the auxiliary, we’ll have an information question. Because a positive passive voice in simple present tense, for instance, follows the following pattern:
S + IS/AM/ARE + VERB3 + ..
then, its possible question forms are, as follows,
IS/AM/ARE + S + VERB3 + …
IS/AM/ARE + S + NOT + VERB3 + …
IS/AM/ARE + NOT + S + VERB3 + …
WH + IS/AM/ARE + S + VERB3 + …
Examples:
They are met by him everyday.
Are they met by him everyday?
Are they not met by him everyday?
Aren’t they met by him everyday?
Who are met by him everyday?
This plant is watered by her every two days.
Is this plant watered by her every two days?
Is this plant not watered by her every two days?
Isn’t this plant watered by her every two days?
What is watered by her every two days?
Which one is watered by her every two days?
And the following examples are for passive voice in simple past tense:
They were met by him yesterday.
Were they met by him yesterday?
Were they not met by him yesterday?
Weren’t they met by him yesterday?
Who were met by him yesterday?
This plant was watered by her this morning.
Was this plant watered by her this morning?
Was this plant not watered by her this morning?
Wasn’t this plant watered by her this morning?
What was watered by her this morning?
Which one was watered by her this morning?
And so are the other tenses.

How to make a sentence from active to passive if it’s followed by an adverb.
For example :
and according to the example, we can take a formula S + must + be + adv + verb 3.
and the formula is S + Will + be + adv + verb3
It’s S + will + adv + be + verb3 .
So, why do they have the different way of putting adverbs, whereas, they both are using “will” ? Can I also say “You will be probably mugged if you walk in the park alone”.
Please explain that clearly, sir. (berlaku buat : should, can, have/has been and the others that are followed by adv)

Posisi adverb tidak ada kaitannya dengan apakah kalimatnya aktif atau pasif. Posisi adverb adalah fleksible, bisa diletakkan di awal, di tengah, atau di akhir clause. Pada umumnya, adverb diletakkan berdekatan dengan verb, adjective, adverb (lain), phrase, atau clause yang diterangkannya, agar stressnya lebih terasa dan lebih nyambung. Namun demikian, penempatan adverb yang benar perlu memperhatikan tipe adverb, apakah tergolong adverb of frequency, adverb of manner, adverb of degree, adverb of time, ataukah adverb of place. Inilah yang akan dibahas dalam hutang yang belum sempat saya bayar.
Varian dari kalimat-kalimat di atas antara lain:
Bagaimana dengan,
Karena probably bukan tergolong adverb of manner, maka kurang tepat kalau langsung diletakkan sebelum main verb. Yang lebih tepat adalah kalau diletakkan diantara will dan be, seperti pada kalimat yang Tiwi berikan.

@Tika Adiwena,
I think you did a great job. Congratulation.
I’d also like to note that I’d prefer not to omit the pronoun “that” from the noun clause for the reason I mentioned to Kanadeva. And lastly, I think “assumes” in question 3 should be “assumed”.
Kanadeva
December 13, 2011
I’m sorry, sir. I think “assumes” (asumsi-asumsi) is plural noun, not verb, so it doesn’t need to be replaced by “assumed”.
Swara Bhaskara
December 14, 2011
The way I look at it is, for example, as follows,
Psychotherapy has been assumed (by psychologists ) to have many benefits, such as, benefit A, benefit B, benefit C, and so forth. Apparently, however, there’s no agreement among clinical psychologists regarding those assumed benefits although they have debated them, the assumed benefits of psychotherapy, for years.
So, in the sentence in question, I think “………… benefits of psychotherapy” should take an adjective, which, in this case, is “assumed” , a participial adjective.
Yes, “assume” is a verb, but I am not sure if it’s also a noun. As far as I know, its noun form is “assumption”. Using this noun is also possible, but the sentence would be as follows,
For years, clinical psychologists have debated the assumptions of the benefits of psychotherapy.
